With Parler Closing Shop, It's Only a Matter of Time Before More "Free Speech" Platforms Fold

Elon Musk buying Twitter is causing a ripple effect among free speech social media platforms. Parler is simply the first one to fall, but more are sure to follow.

After the 2020 Election, we began to see censorship ramp up. Those talking about Election Fraud began to be shadowbanned and silenced. Freedom First Network, the podcast network I co-founded along with JD Rucker, was actually kicked off of Spotify and several podcasting hosts simply for raising concerns about the legitimacy of the 2020 Election.

With the covid-19 plandemic and ensuing “vaccine” mandates, we saw Big Tech take censorship to new heights against anyone who questioned the narrative coming from the flip-flopping führer, “Dr” Anthony Fauci. I personally fell victim to this wave of deplatforming, after talking to a Black Conservative about why the Black Community is so hesitant to get jabbed, and the conversation turned to the Tuskegee Experiments.

This censorship and permanent suspensions led to the rise of several conservative “free speech” platforms, including Parler, Gab, Truth Social, GETTR, CloutHub, MeWe, Frank Social and many others. While none of them were actually free speech platforms, except possibly for Gab, they began to accept all of us “rejects” from the Big Tech platforms. As long as we were being deplatformed and censored, there was a market for these alternative social media platforms.

However, that all changed once Elon Musk purchased Twitter and welcomed back many of us who were permanently suspended. All of these companies that took the opportunity to create platforms for all of us kicked off of the mainstream ones have coasted on the fact that many of us had nowhere else to go but GETTR, Gab or Truth Social. However, they didn’t offer anything except a social media platform that was a copycat knock-off of Twitter or Facebook, but were never quite as good… nor did they offer anything innovative.

That’s exactly what the new owners of Parler realized after purchasing the social media app. In their press release, they explained that, “No reasonable person believes that a Twitter clone just for conservatives is a viable business any more.”

Unfortunately, we have dozens of platforms designed as either Twitter or Facebook clones geared specifically for conservatives kicked off of Big Tech platforms. And while they are limiting their potential for growth with the conservative-specific audiences, they also have no path to true monetization or profitability. This is the primary flaw I am seeing within the current landscape of “free speech” alternative social media platforms.

This is why I believe that Parler is only the first platform to go under, and I’m predicting there’s going to be more to follow. Truth Social is struggling and flatlining, and we’re seeing them cut a lot of staff over the last several months. GETTR’s primary investor, Miles Guo, is dealing with legal issues, plus CEO Jason Miller and several key staff have left the company for greener pastures. I could continue down the list of struggling platforms that are finding themselves floundering while they attempt to stay in business.

It’s time for someone to create a social media platform that can be a legitimate alternative to Big Tech. That means being innovative and enticing users from the main platforms to walk away from Big Tech. To-date, that has simply not happened, but it’s extremely needed.

We need more than just a place to spout off without being censored. We need to have a platform for lively discourse among those that disagree. We need an ecosystem created that can be cancel-proof, but will not just be an echo-chamber that doesn’t allow conservatives to have a voice within mainstream American culture.

Elon Musk is doing something special with Twitter, but he has a big task on his hands to fix such a broken platform. Can he do it? I’m confident he will. But it’s an uphill battle, and there are limitations he’s facing with the platform built as it is. He’s even hinted at rebuilding it from scratch.

Only time will tell whether a platform will rise up that will be the solution to Big Tech. In the meantime, we continue with whatever platforms remain and allow us to freely share information.
