17,500 Illegal Crossings in a Week: CBP Shuts Down Lukeville Port of Entry Amidst Soaring Migration

(Real News No Bullshit) - US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has announced the temporary closure of the Lukeville, Arizona port of entry starting Monday, citing a significant influx of migrants illegally crossing from Mexico. This decision comes as a response to the increasing number of migrants utilizing this route, often dropped off by smugglers and seeking asylum upon encountering Border Patrol agents.

CBP plans to reallocate its staff from overseeing vehicle and pedestrian traffic to assist Border Patrol with the processing and arrest of new arrivals.

The Lukeville crossing, a key access point to various destinations, including the resort area of Puerto Peñasco in Mexico, has seen a significant rise in illegal crossings. John Modlin, the Tucson sector chief of Border Patrol, reported a spike in arrests, with 17,500 illegal crossings recorded in the past week alone. This area has become a major migration route, attracting individuals from countries like Venezuela, Cuba, and even China. According to Modlin, most migrants enter the US through gaps in the border wall and head towards the official crossing in hopes of asylum.

Arizona Senators Mark Kelly (D-AZ) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ), along with Governor Katie Hobbs (D-AZ), have criticized the closure, calling it "unacceptable" and demanding more effective solutions from the Federal government. In a joint statement, the three said, "This is an unacceptable outcome that further destabilizes our border, risks the safety of our communities, and damages our economy by disrupting trade and tourism. The Federal Government must act swiftly to maintain port of entry operations, get the border under control, keep Arizona communities safe, and ensure the humane treatment of migrants."
